The Zollverein Coal Mine was an active coal mine until 1986. Today it's a masterpiece of industrial architecture and is accounted as “the most beautiful coal mine in the world”. Since 2001 it has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Site. The Zollverein Coal Mine is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage and houses several cultural institutions and the Folkwang University of the Arts.
