SLOWFOX - LOFT Köln - Köln

Hayden Chisholm - sax., Philip Zoubek - piano, Sebastian Gramss - bass, comp.

CD "THE WOOD" @ Jazzwerkstatt Berlin, May 2014

"Eine Metamorphose - eine in Klang umgesetztes Gedicht… ….Sebastian Gramss besitzt neben seiner direkten musikalischen Sprache, die er mit Bands wie Underkarl oder Fossile3 umsetzt, eine einfühlsame, die Emotionen streichelnde Klangsprache, die weder aufdringlich noch vorlaut, sondern einfach nur die Seele streichelnde Zurückhaltung aus dem Hintergrund ganz nach vorne stellt…" (JAZZTHETIK 05/14)

"Chisholm’s alto playing had a wide, breathy vibrato around the pure core of the sound, and a way with delicate arpeggios that tugged at the heart strings. He played melodic and freely, with perhaps some Phil Woods in the tone. Gramss often double-stopped the bass to imply the chords, with a gilded resonance. His solos bubbled and brooded behind alto backing lines." (April 25, 2014 at JAZZAHEAD , Bremen)

"Sebastian Gramss is a masterful bass player, establishing his ability to play full dark lines, then demonstrating a consistently firm grasp of arco technique..." (Cadence Magazine, New York)

"Also impressive is the stellar sounds and punchy wit by alto wizard and fashion don Hayden Chisholm." (DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE 03/2003)

SEBASTIAN GRAMSS from Cologne, Germany, studied double bass and composition in Amsterdam and Cologne. He is mostly active in the field of improvised, jazz and contemporary music as a composer, soloist and a member of numerous bands. He has released more than 20 CDs under his name. These include those from the band Underkarl, as well as from the trios SlowFox and Fossile3. His activities include his solo works (Atopie), a long term bass duo series (started with Scodanibbio in 2008), the Cologne-based quartet (BASZ), an international quintet (Barre Phillips´s Crossbows), up to his international double bass orchestra Bassmasse with 50 bass players. He has composed for radio drama, movies and theatre and – among others – for choreographer Pina Bausch. In 2007 he created the Spacebass (basso d’amore), a modified 4 string double bass with the addition of 12 sympathetic strings. In 2013 he received the ECHO national instrumentalist of the year award for the bass.

HAYDEN CHISHOLM is a New Zealand saxophonist and composer. After studying in Cologne with a DAAD scholarship, he continued his music studies in Japan and India. In 1995 he developed a radical new microtonal system for saxophone which he revealed on his debut solo CD "Circe". Since then, his compositions have been recorded by BBC and WDR radios and he has toured and recorded extensively with the likes of Root70, WDR Big Band, Musikfabrik Ensemble, and David Sylvian. He has created music for several Rebecca Horn installations as well as composing scores for her films. He has taught at Universities throughout the world and gives yearly master classes in Greece. He is the author of one of Germany's most popular music and travel blogs: http://www.softspeakers.com/. He curates the annual Plushmusic festival in Cologne and Bremen.

PHILIP ZOUBEK is an Austrian piano player and composer from Tulln. He studied jazz-piano in Vienna and Cologne, where he lives since 2001. Few others explore so greatly the variety of sounds of the piano, making him the exceptional pianist both among the distinguished Austrian improvisers and within the Cologne scene. Starting from "traditional" preparation techniques á la Cage, Philip Zoubek has a wide arsenal of preparation material (aluminum pots, plastic utensils, glass jars, etc.), from the rich tone of a noise-like percussion up to electronic sounds. Zoubek worked with Louis Sclavis, Rudi Mahall, Michael Moore, Michael Vatcher, Simon Nabatov, Frank Gratkowski, Wilbert de Joode, Thomas Lehn, Clayton Thomas, Paul Lytton, and many others.
